Have you ever wondered why Fox News, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, et al. go out of their way to paint President Obama as a foreign born, un-American, outsider who's bent on creating a socialistic welfare state that's destroying America? The reasons are simple. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson understood them very well.
Reflecting on what had created entrenched social, racial and wealth divisions throughout the American south, President Johnson put the full weight of the presidency behind civil rights legislation. The goal was to force white America to see black America as electoral and social equals.
Without civil rights legislation President Johnson understood that injustice and inequality would continue in the American south because as long as "you can convince the lowest white man that he's better than the best colored man he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll even empty his pockets for you" ...
Those who seek to nullify President Obama's presidency by questioning both his legitimcay and place in America understand this, and know exactly what they're doing.
As an aside, it also helps us understand why so many people vote against their own economic interests.
