HOW I'M VOTING ... PLUS SOME HELPFUL BALLOT INFORMATION FOR THIS NOVEMBER
Below is my sample ballot, which tells you how I plan on voting on November 6th (click on the ballot to enhance clarity) ...
While I reside in California's 23rd congressional district, which makes House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy my Rep., I am encouraging everyone who can to vote for his opponent, Tatiana Matta, in the 23rd district.
For those who live in the San Joaquin Valley, but outside my congressional district, I'm asking you to vote for TJ Cox in the 21st congressional district (over David Valadao) and to support Andrew Janz (over Devin Nunes) in the 22nd congressional district. Many of the problems we have at the national level stem from having a Congress with no backbone. Our Republican-led Congress doesn't seem to understand what separation of powers means, and seem more than willing to turn a blind eye to Donald Trump's corruption of our political system (no matter how bad it gets).
Keven McCarthy, David Valadao, and Devin Nunes are political sycophants in Trump's orbit of corruption.

THE PROPOSITIONS-INITIATIVES ...
While you may want to take your cue from a particular group's position listed above, I am letting you know how I will vote on the initiatives below, with most of the easy to understand commentary posted by my friend Seven.
___________________________
Propositions 1-4: Yes.
Prop 5: NO. Rich people need to stop trying to take away money from low income communities and schools, thanks.
Prop 6: NO. " I agree that the gas tax is regressive and hits the poorest people the hardest, but that money is actually going to vital fixes on our infrastructure. These are projects that have directly benefited some of the worst roads in our area. NO"
Prop 7: Yeah, I guess. (I honestly don't particularly care)
Prop 8: Yes. You shouldn't have to go bankrupt to not die, c'mon people.
Prop 11: No ... "This proposition is backed by a company that lost an unfair labour case and is trying to wiggle out of paying back pay to EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, and other first responders. First responders deserve to take paid breaks during their shift, just like everyone else. It's dangerous to make them work 12-24 hour shifts with no breaks. NO"
Prop 12: Yes. Factory farming is pretty weak sauce, tbh.
IN KERN COUNTY AND BAKERSFIELD ...
PBVU Bond Measure H: Yes, give schools money.
The Three Cannabis Initiatives in Kern County, Measures J, K and O: Quoting from my university colleague - a guy who's writing his Ph.D. on the drug trade - all of the cannabis measures have some flaws. Still, Measure K is especially challenged because it creates monopolistic conditions. Vote No on "K" but cast a YES vote YES on both "J" and "O" to help Kern County muddle along until the city and our region get their act together.
Bakersfield Measure N: Yes, anything would be an improvement over the current state of our emergency services in this town.
If you live in Arvin, vote with Mayor Jose Gurrola. He has some great plans for the city, and he's willing to stand up to the oil industry.
__________________
Finally, while I do not live in their supervisorial districts I would vote for ...
Jeff Heinle in Kern County's 3rd supervisorial District,
Grace Vallejo in the 4th supervisorial district, and
Whitney Wedell in the 2nd supervisorial district.

IS TRUMP'S 'FAKE NEWS' WAIL PART OF A BROADER PROGRAM?
When you have Fox News and the right-wing noise machine doing their thing, plus the Bully Pulpit under the control of a man like Donald Trump, we are one step closer to the slow drip of nationalist propaganda twisting and manipulating the truth on a regular basis.
Trump's lying and "fake news" cries may be exhausting, but they're achieving the larger goals of discrediting our nation's institutions and sowing the seeds of division. There's nothing inclusive or uplifting in Trump's message. Our recent 72 hours of hate-filled crimes from three hate-filled suspects makes this abundantly clear.

AS LONG AS WE'RE TALKING ABOUT CARAVANS

YES, TRUMP IS STOKING FEAR AND PARANOIA
Immigrants on their way to Ellis Island, 1906. Boats regularly carried 7-8,000 people. |
The number of people arrested for attempting to cross the border today (360,000) pales in comparison to what we saw at the beginning of the 21st century (1.6 million). Even the scary "caravan" Trump is crying about doesn't measure up the record number of people Ellis Island handled in day (over 11,000). Yet, Donald Trump continues to fear monger and stir up paranoia because it's what feeds his base.
From the LA Times ...
**************
Trump’s gross lies about the caravan
The president’s portrayal
of the situation at the border
is detached from reality.
Take the caravan of migrants currently traveling north from Honduras and Guatemala. Citing no evidence at all, Trump on Monday claimed there were “criminals and Middle Easterners” mixed into the group, in a blatant effort to stoke more xenophobia and fear.
In fact, the stream of roughly 7,000 people is made up mostly of ordinary men, women and children — part of a long tradition of families coming to the United States to make their lives better and in the process make our society richer.
An honest observer would find few meaningful differences between the migrants currently heading north and the newcomers who crossed the Atlantic between 1892 and 1954, when more than 12 million immigrants came to this country.
Trump’s entire characterization of the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border is misleading. It’s true that arrests at the border are at their highest levels since the president took office, and according to Homeland Security statistics published last week by the Washington Post, there has indeed been an 80% increase in arrests of families traveling with children since July.
But the total number of arrests along the border remains well below the historic peaks of two decades ago. So far in fiscal year 2018, U.S. Border Patrol agents have arrested 369,579 people along the border. This is up from the 303,916 arrests made in fiscal year 2017, but it’s down from the 408,870 arrests made in 2016 — and nowhere near the 1,643,679 arrests in 2000.
The rate of arrests at the border is less than a quarter of what it was at the turn of the century, in other words, even though the number of agents has doubled since then.
Even the migrant caravan, which appears so large and striking on TV and social media, and so menacing in Trump’s rhetoric, is really just a small huddled mass. Its roughly 7,000 people don’t amount to even 0.5% of the arrests made in 2000.
The disconnect between Trump’s distortions and the actual situation at the border is vast. At the same time, his words — and the actions of those in his administration — are shaping many lives in very tangible ways.
His administration’s policies send the National Guard to the border. His fearful rhetoric leads us to lean harder on Mexico to do the dirty work of enforcement. His hubris results in walls. And his callousness inflicts punishment and anguish through family separation, criminalization and mass detention.
The punishment may broaden, with Trump threatening on Monday to cut off or substantially reduce aid to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador for failing to prevent the caravan from traveling north.
There is great irony to all this, of course. As the Trump administration issues threats and hardens the border, it makes mass tactics like caravans a more sensible choice for families fleeing the poverty and violence of life in Central America.
Such mass tactics, so perfectly primed for easy consumption across cable news shows and social media, feed the paranoia and fear of the president’s base and fuel more enforcement.
Trump, in turn, can use the images to augment his myth of an immigration crisis and mobilize more Republican voters to turn out for the midterm election, thereby strengthening his ability to manufacture a sense of emergency.
Although Trump’s portrayal of the situation is detached from what is actually going on, he is producing a new disturbing reality. The cycle is reinforcing and ultimately dehumanizing.
Americans are left with a stark choice. We can act on an interpretation of the actual facts, which show that there is no crisis. Or we can act on the fantasy that Trump and his angry throngs of xenophobes are looking to create.
I hope we will look back at our own history to affirm our values. The international border separating the U.S. and Mexico is the Ellis Island of our time. We can turn our backs on the huddled masses or we can live up to what we have long claimed this country stands for.

KCET's "DIVIDE AND CONQUER" EXPLAINS GERRYMANDERING, WITH LOS ANGELES AND KERN COUNTY AS THEIR STORY BYLINES
Kern County Sheriffs during UFW-led labor standoff. |
Los Angeles' KCET does an excellent job in "Divide and Conquer" explaining how gerrymandering works, and why it has historically disenfranchised Latino voters in California. Using the histories of Los Angeles County in the 20th century and then Kern County in the 21st century, we see how redistricting is not a fluid process, and why fighting for your rights doesn't simply mean voting. You have to be active and use the courts to gain both access and electoral legitimacy in America.
In the clip below, while MALDEF and the Dolores Huerta Foundation are recognized, Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez comes across as a real champion.

FOX NEWS: "THERE IS NO EVIDENCE" TO BACK TRUMP'S CLAIMS ABOUT THE ASYLUM CARAVAN IN MEXCIO
As I've pointed out before, Shepard Smith is perhaps the only real journalist at Fox News. Two days ago Shepard Smith said that Donald Trump has no evidence to back up his claim that asylum seekers from Central America are accompanied by a mix of "criminals" and "unknown Middle Easterners." Put another way, Donald Trump's scare mongering on the topic is based on a lie.
For the record, the United States granted almost 85,000 people asylum in 2016, with the leading countries of national origin for refugees being the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Syria and Burma. Included in this number were about 20,000 who were granted asylum, with China, El Salvador and Guatemala the lead asylum nationalities.
Refugee seekers are usually those who are living outside of the U.S. and seeking official recognition because of "persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion."
People seeking asylum are either in the U.S. already, or have arrived at a point of entry into the U.S., and are suffering threats of persecution and violence.
In any event, it's interesting to see so many Christians in the United States turning their collective backs on refugees and asylum seekers who are seeking protection in the United States. The Bible I know is full of stories of persecution and violence against the poor and destitute, which our Christian nation seems to have forgotten about ...
Just saying.

CENTRAL AMERICAN INSTABILITY & VIOLENCE STOKED BY U.S. INTERVENTIONS
___________________
In this article from VICE.com we get an all too brief introduction explaining, in part, what's driving the refugees from Central America. Many of Trump's supporters won't want to acknowledge it, but what we're seeing today is a product of what former CIA analyst Chalmers Johnson called "blowback."
In simpler terms, the chickens are coming home to roost.
If you want to know the roots of this story, you can start with this book, which explains the U.S.-led overthrow of a democratically elected government in 1954.

THE REAL TERROR THREAT IN AMERICA IS RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSE
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is reporting that almost two-thirds of the terror attacks in the United States last year were carried out by right-wing extremists. This is in line with data from previous years.
Citing data put together by researchers at Quartz and the Global Terrorism Database, the SPLC explained that right-wing terror attacks were carried out with "racist, anti-Muslim, homophobic, ant-Semetic, anti-government, or xenophobic motivations."
The remaining attacks were driven either by left-wing or Islamic extremists.
It's interesting to note that while terrorist attacks dropped globally from about 17,000 in 2014 to about 11,000 in 2017, terrorist attacks driven by right-wing extremism is up in the United States.
What this tells us is that unless Donald Trump plans on building a wall around the right-wing lunatic fringe in America, terror related attacks in America will not drop because of his border wall, or his border policies.

FAMILY CORNERS MARKET ON DRAFT DODGING, BUT TRUMP STILL CLAIMS "OUR ANCESTORS" TAMED A CONTINENT
So, Donald "Five-Deferments" Trump is now claiming "our ancestors" tamed a continent ...
If you know anything about Donald Trump's family history - and I do - it's pretty clear that Trump's "ancestors" were running away from military service in Germany upon arriving in America. Because of Friedrich Trump's "military service dodging" history the Germans didn't want the Trump family returning to their country. Specifically, Bavaria's Prince Regent Luitpold saw the self-serving cowardice in Trump's grandfather (which appears to be a strong strain in the family DNA), and rejected Friedrich Trump's request to return to Germany in 1905.
In fact, the only thing Trump appears to have had a hand in taming is the gullible hordes who make up the cult he's now manipulating, and the self-serving cretins at Fox News.

TRUMP'S EMBRACE OF SAUDI ARABIA IS BOTH A "LICENSE TO KILL" AND A STEP BACKWARD FOR THE HUMAN CONDITION
By now, most have heard about what happened to Jamal Khashoggi, a "prominent Saudi dissident journalist who wrote for the Washington Post." He was murdered in a "gruesome" fashion after arriving at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Turkey ...
For many, what happened to Jamal Khashoggi is not surprising given Saudi Arabia's reputation for treating those who disagree with their policies ...
What's surprising is how vociferously Donald Trump is defending and standing by the Saudi regime in spite of evidence that strongly suggests the Saudi's were involved in, or had advance knowledge of, Jamal Khashoggi's murder ...
The worst part is what Trump's position towards Saudi Arabia tells our press how they can expect to be treated by authoritarian states (with Trump's acquiesence) around the world, and how far Trump is willing to go to send a message to those he considers to be part of his mythical "fake news" ...
Let me make this real simple. This is how democracies die in history.

DONALD TRUMP "MAY BE THE MOST FISCALLY RECKLESS PRESIDENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY"
_______________________
Projections from the 2019 budget tell us that if Donald Trump continues spending at the rate he is currently doing, he will add almost as much to our national debt ($8.28 trillion) in four years as President Obama did in eight ($8.58 trillion). This would also make Trump the second biggest contributor to U.S. debt in history.
But he would accomplish this in only four years.
Below are the highest contributors to U.S. national debt by presidential administration, in percentage terms, with a a brief overview of what drove the deficit spending.
Franklin D. Roosevelt: 1,048% increase.
Debt Drivers: Great Depression (lost revenue), New Deal & World War II.
Woodrow Wilson: 727% increase.
Debt Driver: World War I.
Ronald Reagan: 186% increase.
Debt Drivers: Tax Cuts (lost revenue) & Military Spending.
George W. Bush: 101% increase.
Debt Drivers: Tax Cuts (lost revenue) & the War on Terror.
Barack Obama: 74% increase:
Debt Drivers: Financial Crisis (lost revenue), Economic Stimulus, Tax Cuts.
Here's the primary points that should be taken away from this information. Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt fought two world wars and an economic depression (FDR), and can be given a pass on their deficit spending. Donald Trump has no major crisis to clean up, or no new major military engagement to fight. Deficit spending during his term is simply reckless tax cuts, which are adding hundreds of billions to our budget deficits.
On another level, when it comes to spending by administration, Presidents Obama and Clinton were quite the fiscal conservatives ...
As for spending under Donald Trump, the very conservative Cato Institute's Michael Tanner says that federal spending under Trump "has increased by 7.5 percent." What this means, according to Forbes' Stan Collender, is that Donald Trump "may be the most fiscally reckless president in American history."
So, yeah, reckless deficits and even more reckless spending.
If you think this is MAGA you are part of the problem.

DONALD TRUMP & KEVIN McCARTHY BENEFIT FROM DIVISIVE ETHNIC DISTINCTIONS, BUT STILL WANT THEIR RACE-BAITING WALL
Senator Elizabeth Warren released the results of her DNA test, showing there's "strong evidence" she has Native American blood in her family tree dating back 6 to 10 generations. Senator Warren (D-MA) is now calling on Donald Trump - who mocked her as "Pocahontas" on the campaign trail - to make good on his promise to pay $1 million to the charity of her choice if she proved she has Native American blood in her family tree.
The DNA results show that Senator Warren has Native American blood at a level of 1/32, which makes her a lineal Native American descendant. Donald Trump, who got serious political mileage with his base after mocking Sen. Warren Warren's claim (see below), has backed away from his promise to pay up, even denying that he made the promise.
All of this is made even more topical because of revelations that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy's brother-in-law applied for and was awarded contracts designed for people of Native American ancestry. Specifically, McCarthy's brother-in-law, William Wages, owns Vortex Construction in Bakersfield, and claims that he is 1/8 Native American (Cherokee). This has made him "eligible" to secure contracts set aside specifically for minority groups, and garnered him millions of dollars in federal contracts. The Los Angeles Times writes:
For his part, Rep. McCarthy has benefited and gotten a good deal of political mileage on his own by refusing to meet with Latino groups in his district, and for promising to carry legislation to build Donald Trump's divisive and race-baiting border wall. The wall, as many of you are aware, is designed specifically to keep out Mexicans and native-indigenous groups fleeing violence in Central America.
In all cases, here's something to keep in mind when discussing blood lines and ancestry. There's actually a system for monitoring
and establishing "race" and indigenous categories. So, for example,
Kevin's brother-in-law might be able to claim "lineal" heritage (though Cherokee genealogists cast doubt on the assertion)
but it appears he might not be able to apply for and qualify as a member of any
recognized indigenous group. Some tribal groups require 50 percent, while others require 25 percent, and others 12.5 percent (1/8) and 6.25 percent (1/16).
Again, the tribal group Wages claims is not recognized by legitimate indigenous groups.
Coming from a party and president that seems hell bent on making it difficult for certain ethnic, indigenous and religious groups to enjoy the American experience, it appears that Donald Trump and Kevin McCarthy certainly have no problem using - and letting others use - ethnic distinctions for political and economic gain when it suits their interests.
This isn't just hypocrisy. These people are simply vile human beings who make a mockery of what America is, and what America represents to the rest of the world.

Wages says he is one-eighth Cherokee. An examination of government and tribal records by The Times and a leading Cherokee genealogist casts doubt on that claim, however. He is a member of a group called the Northern Cherokee Nation, which has no federal or state recognition as a legitimate tribe. It is considered a fraud by leaders of tribes that have federal recognition.
For his part, Rep. McCarthy has benefited and gotten a good deal of political mileage on his own by refusing to meet with Latino groups in his district, and for promising to carry legislation to build Donald Trump's divisive and race-baiting border wall. William Wages,Rep. Kevin McCarthy's brother-in-law, secured millions of dollars in contracts set aside for minority groups, which included Native American groups. |
Again, the tribal group Wages claims is not recognized by legitimate indigenous groups.
On another level, one could make the case for "lineal descent" (less than 1/16?) but that doesn't necessarily qualify the claimant for programs or the contracts managed and ran by the federal government. At the end of the day, a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) can be secured from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which is run by the U.S. Department of Interior. The CDIB certificate "is the basis most tribes use to enroll tribe members."
This isn't just hypocrisy. These people are simply vile human beings who make a mockery of what America is, and what America represents to the rest of the world.
