HOW OUR REALLY MESSED UP PRIMARY PROCESS ACTUALLY WORKS ... by John Oliver

PrimaryPolitics comic courtesy of Steve Sack, The-Minneapolis-Star-Tribune

About a month ago I was asked by a real smart person about the primary process. It was a real simple question. But it kind of stumped me because I never really thought about the question until he asked me the way he did. He wanted to know who we're voting for when we vote during the primary season. While it's easy to say that "You're voting for Candidate X" and to leave it at that, the reality is quite different.

We're actually voting for a slate of people - glorified electors - who are supposed to vote for our party's candidate(s) at the national convention. But this only happens if your candidate wins. It's kind of like an electoral college for the primary season ... if that makes sense.

It's actually more complicated than this. But there's no reason for me to elaborate when John Oliver's available to explain our nation's insanely complex primary process, in his usual hilarious way of course. Enjoy ...
