This John Oliver clip on poultry farmers as private contractors is one of the funniest rants from any commentator or comedian that I've seen in a while. It's also spot on because of how it helps us see why the working poor have such a difficult time pulling themselves up financially because of how the largest poultry companies in the country intimidate and even undermine their own contractors.
Best of all, Oliver's clip helps us understand what's wrong with democracy in America.
In the FYI category, I spent a good deal of time studying and writing about the poultry industry in Mexico. While the contractor model Oliver describes has worked well in Mexico, we want to keep in mind that the poorer private contractors in Mexico live in Third World conditions.
I'll leave it at that for now.
